Ingredients for Chicken Paprika Cream

Alright, let’s gather our goodies! Here’s what you’ll need for this amazing Chicken Paprika Cream. Don’t worry, it’s mostly stuff you probably already have!

  • 500g chicken breast fillet, cut into bite-sized strips – I usually aim for about 3-4 cm long.
  • 3 bell peppers (I like a mix of red and yellow for color!), sliced into thin strips.
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced – or more if you’re a garlic fiend like me!
  • 350 ml heavy cream (Sahne) – or if you’re watching your waistline, Cremefine works great too.
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, for sautéing.
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste (Tomatenmark).
  • Italian herbs, to taste – I usually just eyeball it!
  • Sweet paprika (edelsüß), to taste – be generous! That’s where the magic happens.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste.

How to Prepare Chicken Paprika Cream: Step-by-Step Instructions

Okay, ready to get cooking? Don’t worry, it’s super easy! Just follow these steps, and you’ll have a delicious Chicken Paprika Cream on the table in no time. Let’s do this!

Preparing the Chicken and Vegetables for Chicken Paprika Cream

First things first, let’s get all our ingredients prepped. Take your chicken breast fillets and slice them into strips – about 3-4 cm long is perfect. Then, grab your bell peppers, remove the seeds, and slice them into thin strips too. Dice that onion nice and fine. Finally, mince the garlic. I like to use a garlic press, but chopping it works just as well. Having everything ready to go makes the whole process so much smoother! Trust me on this!

Searing the Chicken

Now, heat up the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Once it’s nice and hot, add the chicken strips. You’ll want to sear them for about 3-4 minutes, until they’re nicely browned on all sides. Don’t overcrowd the pan, or the chicken will steam instead of sear. Give it some space! Season the chicken with sweet paprika, salt, and pepper while it’s cooking. Once it’s cooked through, remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside. We’ll add it back in later!

Creating the Chicken Paprika Cream Sauce

If the pan looks a little dry, add a drizzle more olive oil. Add the diced onion and cook for a minute or two, until it starts to soften. Then, toss in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until it’s fragrant. Careful not to burn the garlic, or it’ll get bitter! Add the bell pepper strips and cook for about 3 minutes, until they’re tender-crisp. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another minute. Now, pour in the heavy cream (Sahne) and bring it to a simmer. Let it simmer for about 5-10 minutes, until the sauce has thickened slightly. Finally, stir in the Italian herbs, salt, and pepper to taste. My favorite part is smelling it all come together!

Combining and Simmering

Okay, the grand finale! Add the cooked chicken back into the pan with the creamy paprika sauce. Stir everything together to make sure the chicken is nicely coated. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for another 5 minutes or so, allowing the flavors to meld together. This is where the magic happens! And that’s it! Your Chicken Paprika Cream is ready to serve. Yay!

Tips for the Best Chicken Paprika Cream

Want to take your Chicken Paprika Cream to the next level? Of course, you do! Here are a few of my secret weapons:

  • Don’t skip the searing! It adds SO much flavor to the chicken.
  • Taste as you go! Adjust the paprika, salt, and pepper to your liking. Everyone’s taste buds are different!
  • Watch the heat! You don’t want the sauce to boil, just simmer gently.
  • If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of chicken broth or milk to thin it out.

Trust me, these little tricks make a HUGE difference!

Frequently Asked Questions About Chicken Paprika Cream

Got questions about my amazing Chicken Paprika Cream? Don’t worry, I’ve got answers! Here are a few of the most common questions I get asked:

Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts in Chicken Paprika Cream?

Absolutely! Chicken thighs are a great substitute. They’re a little more flavorful and stay super moist. Just trim off any excess fat and cut them into bite-sized pieces, just like you would with the chicken breasts. You might need to cook them a little longer, so just make sure they’re cooked through before adding them back to the sauce.

How do I make Chicken Paprika Cream spicier?

Ooh, you want to kick it up a notch? I love that! There are a few ways to add some heat. You can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce, or a dash of your favorite hot sauce. You could even use a spicier paprika, like smoked paprika or even a little bit of cayenne pepper. Start small and taste as you go, so you don’t accidentally blow your head off!

Can I freeze Chicken Paprika Cream?

Good question! Yes, you can freeze it, but the texture of the sauce might change a little bit. Cream sauces sometimes get a little grainy after freezing and thawing. To minimize this, let it cool completely before freezing, and thaw it slowly in the refrigerator overnight. When you reheat it, gently stir it over low heat. If it looks a little separated, you can add a splash of milk or cream to bring it back together. I mean, fresh is always best, but sometimes you just gotta prep ahead, right?

What kind of paprika should I use for Chicken Paprika Cream?

For this recipe, I usually use sweet paprika (edelsüß). It gives the dish that classic paprika flavor without being too spicy. But honestly, you can experiment! Smoked paprika adds a really nice depth of flavor, and a little bit of hot paprika can give it a kick. Just start with a small amount and taste as you go. Play around and see what you like best!
